Transfer and Inventory Components of Developing Repository Services

How do we get files "new and legacy" from where they are to where they need to be? And how do we record and track events in the life cycle of our files? This presentation describes current work at the Library in implementing tools to meet these needs as a set of modular services -- Transfer, Transport, and Inventory -- that will fit into a larger scheme of repository services to be developed. These modular services do not equate to everything needed to call a system a repository. But this is a set of services that equate to many aspects of "ingest" and "archiving" the registry of a deposit activity, the controlled transfer and transport of files, and an inventory system that can be used to track files, record events in those files life cycles, and provide basic file-level discovery and auditing. This is the first stage in the development of a suite of tools to help the Library ensure long-term stewardship of its digital assets

Towards an integrated workforce management system

We describe progress towards a workforce management system in which personnel scheduling is integrated with other important processes such as payroll processing, attendance and absence recording, staffing forecast and planning, etc. Our focus is on customeroriented sectors in which a considerable proportion of the available workforce is part-time. First, we discuss the importance of having an integrated workforce management strategy and then, we address the particular aspects of shift pattern design and staff allocation using a fast-food restaurant and a leisure centre as examples

Historical background to the South African horse mackerel fishery and its management

The commercial fishery for the South African horse mackerel Trachurus capensis began in 1950. Horse mackerel are exploited by four fleets: purse-seine, offshore demersal, inshore demersal, and midwater trawl. Characterisation of the catches by these sectors is complex. A brief summary will be given here, and will be described in more detail later

From Theory to Intervention: Mapping Theoretically Derived Behavioural Determinants to Behaviour Change Techniques

Theory provides a helpful basis for designing interventions to change behaviour but offers little guidance on how to do this. This paper aims to illustrate methods for developing an extensive list of behaviour change techniques (with definitions) and for linking techniques to theoretical constructs. A list of techniques and definitions was generated from techniques published in two systematic reviews, supplemented by "brainstorming" and a systematic search of nine textbooks used in training applied psychologists. Inter-rater reliability of extracting the techniques and definitions from the textbooks was assessed. Four experts judged which techniques would be effective in changing 11 theoretical constructs associated with behaviour change. Thirty-five techniques identified in the reviews were extended to 53 by brainstorming and to 137 by consulting textbooks. Agreement for the 53 definitions was 74.7 per cent (15.4% cells completed and 59.3% cells empty for both raters). Agreement about the link between the 35 techniques and theoretical constructs was 71.7 per cent of 385 judgments (12.2% agreement that effective and 59.5% agreement that not effective). This preliminary work demonstrates the possibility of developing a comprehensive, reliable taxonomy of techniques linked to theory. Hake Data: problems, solutions and GLM CPUE sensitivity to alternate scenarios

The checks carried out on the hake offshore trawl catch and effort data, which provide the basis to split the catches by species and to obtain GLM-standardised CPUE indices of abundance by species, have focused on two separate steps. The first was a re-extract of the data from the original files to check for possible errors in the earlier extracts (this applies to the subset of the data for which size composition information can be unambiguously extracted). The second step was to increase the proportion of the data utilised (and at the same time to check for possible selection biases in the existing sample) by assigning size composition to drags for which this information was not directly available, on the basis of the average for other vessels for which this was available for the area and time at which the fishing concerned took place. The first step revealed a problem with extractions over the last few years which at times for certain vessels had linked the accumulated catch for the day with only the effort for the last trawl of the day, rather than for all trawls that day combined
